CIVIC ENGAGEMENT | An affordable housing crisis, rising economic inequities and multiple education scandals have become familiar issues in the District. During her State of the District address, DC’s Mayor Bowser touched on a few of these topics, as well as the city’s homeless population and the maternal health care gap. (WAMU, 3/15)
Closing the D.C. General family homeless shelter: Just this week, homeless advocates raised questions over Bowser’s plan to close the shelter this year, even though only three of the six replacement shelters will be ready. They also alluded to suspicions that the closing was linked to the city’s bid for Amazon’s HQ2. “I know some folks think we’re moving too quickly, or that we’re only trying to free up land,” said Bowser. “But let me say this: When it comes to closing D.C. General, we cannot move fast enough. That shelter is an embarrassment to our city, and I will not be the mayor who passed up an opportunity to demolish it.”
