EDUCATION | Students across the region are facing consequences after they participated in a walkout to call for gun reform. Students have increasingly used this tactic to make their voices heard but school administrators are still figuring out how to respond. The different school systems had varying reactions ranging from detention to support. (WaPo, 2/22)
Students in Prince William County have been told they will be disciplined for walking out of school without authorization. In Montgomery County, students learned their absences would be unexcused and their grades could be affected. For Arlington County students taking part in protests, the message from the school district was one of understanding, not punishment.
