In today’s Washington Business Journal:

The charitable arms of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, formerly the two top givers in the Washington region, got the OK at the close of 2008 to restart charitable giving… The federal government took control of the two companies in September to prevent their collapse, largely freezing their charitable activities… That spurred a lobbying effort by hundreds of local nonprofits, prompting local members of Congress to write Lockhart and ask that the charities be allowed to continue philanthropic activities.
