Hot off the wires: “Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit”

Washington, DC Region’s Philanthropy Highlighted at First Ever International Conference of Philanthropic Leaders May 4-7

WASHINGTON, April 16 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — The impact of philanthropy in the Washington DC region will be highlighted at the upcoming Council on Foundations international conference, Philanthropy’s Vision: A Leadership Summit, May 4-7, 2008, at the new Gaylord National Resort & Conference Center at National Harbor, Maryland.

Philanthropic investments in the DC region are robust. National funders spent more than $1.5 billion in the region in 2005 compared with $407 million in 1992, reflecting more than a ten percent increase in funding above the national average during that same time period. According to the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers, foundation and corporate giving members pumped almost half a billion dollars of philanthropic investments into the region in 2007.

“There is much to discover about the innovative power of philanthropy in our region,” says Tamara Copeland, President of the Washington Regional Association of Grantmakers and a co-chairperson of the Host Committee for the conference. “With more than 4,000 local nonprofit organizations having positive impact on lives here, we are striving to meet many of the same
challenges that communities across the country — and the world — face every day. We hope to share, inspire and to learn from others across the globe during this extraordinary meeting of philanthropic leaders.”
