Case Foundation Announces 20 Finalists for Voting Awards (Chronicle, 3/25) – The top four will get $25,000 to make their ideas a reality. Voters at can win $2,500 for their favorite cause. WG member Case Foundation launched the program “to shift the way institutions and citizens interact“… “to inspire more, and more effective, civic engagement.”

Training meets philanthropy at [WG member] IBM (IHT, 3/26) “IBM’s program, which it calls the Corporate Service Corps, stands out on several counts. It uses the volunteer ethos to throw together employees who might otherwise never meet, even as it gives IBM a high profile in countries where the company does not yet have a major presence.”

– Maryland’s Kids First Act, which would use income tax process to identify uninsured, eligible children, wins preliminary approval in the House. (WaPo, 3/26)

President Proposes Expanding DC School Voucher Program (School Reform News, 4/1 issue) 

‘Positive Nature,’ a nonprofit serving at-risk youth, may have to close because of rising property taxes (WaPo, 3/26) – according to the video that accompanies the article, the Council will soon vote on a tax abatement for this nonprofit.
