D.C.’s Out-of-School Time funders share winning strategies

CYF Wallace Meeting

Demonstrating the Region’s strategies for collaboration firsthand, The Children, Youth, and Families (CYF) Working Group and the Wallace Foundation recently co-hosted a meeting of Out-of-School Time (OST) funders from Boston, Providence, New York, D.C., and Chicago. The Wallace Foundation specifically chose to convene its partners here to highlight area funders as a model. Participants exchanged ideas about leadership strategies, collaboration, data gathering, community involvement, and operating principles in each of their cities, and left the two-day convening with new ideas and shared goals.

The entertainers at the first night’s dinner deserve special mention: Funders enjoyed a powerful performance from The Kankouran West African Dance Company, an OST grantee that provides unique cultural programs for DC-area youth, and student poets from DC’s Creative Writing Workshop wowed the audience with hopeful, melancholic, and brutally honest self-reflections. (Read the poems here [.doc])
