How did this get organized? A Facebook.com group called “Rebuild Eastern Market” formed on the day of the fire, attracted over 1,000 people, and has now partnered with local businesses to raise money for the Capitol Hill Community Foundation. (Express, 5/8) (Yep. Things are changing.) 

ARTS
“United Arts Organization shuts down operations” (subscription – WBJ, 5/4) – Way back in 2000, when it relied on employees donating through payroll deductions, the D.C.-based UAO was the country’s sixth-largest united arts fund–but the group began to suffer “as donors increasingly turned to making donations directly to charities online.” (Yep. Things are really changing.)

HOMELESSNESS
[Va.] Doorways for Women and Families has been awarded a Kresge Foundation Capital Challenge Grant towards the construction of the Freddie Mac Foundation Family Home, a new shelter currently under construction in Arlington County that will provide temporary housing for women, children and families experiencing homelessness.
