[Md.] Pr. George’s Superintendent would use private grants to help fund initiatives (WaPo, 4/9) – John Deasy has proposed working with the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region [WG member]. School Board members hope a successful start will persuade taxpayers of the programs’ worth.

[Md.] Record funding for school construction (WaPo, 4/8) – To reduce need for “temporary learning shacks,” Montgomery and Prince George’s counties each receive $52.25 million in state budget.

Freddie Mac Foundation funds expansion of tax prep program (Examiner, 4/9) – The Freddie Mac Foundation [WG member] has announced a $750,000 grant to the Children’s Defense Fund to help low-income families take advantage of tax credits.

[Md.] Last chance for Pr. George’s hospital? (WaPo, 4/9) – “If no deal is reached by tonight, the hospital could close as soon as this spring.”

HOUSING/COMMUNITIES
[D.C.] “The Promise of Poplar Point” (WaPo, 4/9) – Neglected ever since I-295 severed it from the community in the early 1960s, big things are now in store for Poplar Point on the Anacostia Waterfront. Will there be any affordable housing? The answer seems to involve soccer.
